Efforts are underway to get a Congressional Medal awarded to a terminally ill college football legend.

Florida Congressman Neal Dunn, from the Panhandle, says Bobby Bowden is "one of the most highly respected individuals in the state" and has filed a bill to award the longtime FSU head coach a Congressional Gold Medal.

Among the 15 co-sponsors are three FSU graduates, Republicans Byron Donalds, Matt Gaetz and John Rutherford, as well as Democrat Al Lawson, a FAMU grad, who worked as an assistant basketball coach at Florida State and represents Tallahassee in Washington.

Bowden retired in 2009 after leading the Seminoles to 12 conference titles and two national championships.

It was recently revealed that the 91-year old has terminal pancreatic cancer.

In a statement announcing he had a terminal illness, Bowden wrote that he was "at peace." His son later told members of the media that the illness was in fact pancreatic cancer.
