Some Florida teachers are scared for their health after Governor DeSantis signed an executive order that prohibits school districts from making masks mandatory for kids.

"You're asking us to put our lives on the line. People are dying. Why aren't you following CDC guidelines?"

That teacher, who wanted to remain anonymous, tells CBS 12 News that their mental health affects the kids they teach.

"If we're upset about something, how do you think we will be with your child? Do you think we're going to be all there? I know a lot of teachers that are going to do the minimum, and that's it."

Watkins Middle School teacher Andrew Bruhn says the delta variant of COVID-19 hit just about everyone in his family and his mother-in-law lost her life.

"If teachers are out there saying 'Man, I'm really nervous about this.' They should be because it could happen to you."

The chairman of the Palm Beach County School Board is having the district's legal team look into whether it's within the governor's authority to issue the order, which asks the state Dept. of Education to withhold funding from school districts that force students to cover their faces.

School starts next Tuesday, Aug. 10.
